DRAGONFLY TAVERN

THE GAME

Dragonfly Tavern is a 2D top-down action-adventure game. Play as the grandson of the owners of Dragonfly Tavern and help them out by going on adventures across a fantasy land filled with interesting biomes and elemental enemies.

Challenges arise from the interactions between the player, the enemies, and the environment. Different elements react in exciting and explosive ways, which can lead to difficulty on the players' part, or they can use their knowledge of the elements to their advantage to gain the upper hand in combat.

MY ROLE

I worked as a programmer on Dragonfly Tavern. This was the first project I worked on where I wasn’t the only programmer on the team, which meant starting things was a little tricky to get used to working alongside two other programmers. Also because this was a “third-year” major project and I was working on it as a second-year it was weird for me to get fully into the work being mostly outside of the project until it was fully underway.

While I didn’t end up contributing as much to the project as I would have hoped it was still a valuable learning experience for me, learning how to work within a team environment on a game has helped me approach projects after this with a good baseline of what to expect and what I can do to get the most out of it.

Due to the timing of Dragonfly Tavern's creation, which took place during my second year at Massey, my game programming skills were not as advanced as they were by my third-year major project. This led me to start slow with taking on new tasks but as the project progressed my confidence also increased and I took on more involved tasks within the development.

However, I still think that my contributions to the game as a whole added value to the project and more importantly it gave me a good starting point to start working on my skills. I thank the whole team who were open to less experienced second-years such as myself to work on their game and help bring the idea to life.
